Now an established part of the landscape, Beacon Schools emerged in 1998, from one of several DfEE (now DfES) initiatives focusing on school-based school improvement. Individual schools identified as exemplifying good practice receive additional funds to carry out Beacon activities, with the aim of offering practical help and support to ‘partner’ schools. Of course, this is a deceptively simple description. Reporting on the evaluation of the pilot phase of the initiative, this article presents the picture from within the Beacon Schools themselves, and from the schools they partnered. It also highlights the implications for local education authorities. Three possible models for Beacon-based learning are put forward, and the strengths and weaknesses of each are assessed. This article provides key insights into the ‘what’, ‘how’ and ‘where next’ of Beacon activity, which should be of value to all schools involved in the initiative. It could also prove interesting to any schools focusing on improvement through partnership. |

CERUKplus is the only free database of current education and children’s service research projects in the UK. CERUKplus would like to include practitioner research undertaken as part of masters degree courses or levels 3 + 4 of the Teacher Learning Academy in 2010, and would like to hear from practitioners interested in doing so. We are committed to supporting teachers and lecturers in their research work and building connections between communities of practice. |

The contribution of research to school improvement has been a matter of considerable debate. It is widely argued that educational practice should be more evidence based, but it is acknowledged that this is not easy to achieve. |
