Catering for reluctant, struggling readers isn’t easy. Tackling boys’ reading (or the lack of it) has been a particular issue in recent years, and the focus has often been on non-fiction texts as a way of hooking interest. Another much-explored area has been the promotion of male role models who might help to build a positive image of reading. Curiosity Kits incorporate both of these strands. Each bag, developed as part of the project reported here, focused on a theme likely to interest the target group, and contained a non-fiction book, a related magazine, a toy or artefact, a wipe-clean activity, a comment book and stickers. What impact would such kits have on the attitudes and reading habits of boys identified as struggling or failing? Find out more about this study in four primary schools, and see how far the kits hit target. |

CERUKplus is the only free database of current education and children’s service research projects in the UK. CERUKplus would like to include practitioner research undertaken as part of masters degree courses or levels 3 + 4 of the Teacher Learning Academy in 2010, and would like to hear from practitioners interested in doing so. We are committed to supporting teachers and lecturers in their research work and building connections between communities of practice. |

The contribution of research to school improvement has been a matter of considerable debate. It is widely argued that educational practice should be more evidence based, but it is acknowledged that this is not easy to achieve. |
