Developing children’s skills in mathematical explanation
Maureen Loomes

Issue 26, 2001           Readership: primary
The task of incorporating thinking skills into the curriculum has led to links being made to existing National Curriculum subjects. Maths offers many opportunities for these skills to be developed, as explanation and reasoning are included in the National Curriculum programme of study for maths. So how can children be taught the skills of written explanation? Can they carry across ideas learned through particular examples to help their performance on other types of mathematical problems? Find out about research in one primary school which suggests ways that written mathematical explanation can be improved.

CERUKplus is the only free database of current education and children’s service research projects in the UK. CERUKplus would like to include practitioner research undertaken as part of masters degree courses or levels 3 + 4 of the Teacher Learning Academy in 2010, and would like to hear from practitioners interested in doing so. We are committed to supporting teachers and lecturers in their research work and building connections between communities of practice.
