Lessons from inspection reports on primary school attendance
Ken Reid

Issue 33, 2005           Readership: primary
Ken Reid highlights some of the findings uncovered from his detailed analysis of the impact on school attendance of Ofsted reports conducted on primary schools in 2003. Some interesting results are revealed, such as: the serious impact low attendance can have upon the outcome of inspections; good and poor practice; how schools located in deprived areas with disproportionate numbers of pupils requiring free school meals, special needs or having above average-numbers of pupils from ethnic minorities tend to have above-average rates of authorised and unauthorised absence. Finally, the data uncovers a large number of schools who report no unauthorised absences whatsoever, including some with above-average rates of authorised absence.

CERUKplus is the only free database of current education and children’s service research projects in the UK. CERUKplus would like to include practitioner research undertaken as part of masters degree courses or levels 3 + 4 of the Teacher Learning Academy in 2010, and would like to hear from practitioners interested in doing so. We are committed to supporting teachers and lecturers in their research work and building connections between communities of practice.
research engaged schools
The contribution of research to school improvement has been a matter of considerable debate. It is widely argued that educational practice should be more evidence based, but it is acknowledged that this is not easy to achieve.
