Using appreciative enquiry in educational research

Appreciative Inquiry (AI) is a relatively new theory developed as an alternative to the problem-solving approach underpinning action research. AI aims to identify good practice, design effective development plans, and ensure implementation. In this session, the presenters will explore the theory and practice of AI and how it differs from the traditional problem solving approach, then guide participants through an exercise which involves designing an interview schedule that addresses the four cycles of AI. Finally presenters will discuss issues for consideration when using AI arising from their current project which deploys AI in researching and developing community cohesion in schools.

Maha is a senior researcher at NFER and is currently leading a project using appreciative inquiry in exploring young people's views on community cohesion.

She is a member of the research team evaluating the implementation of Diplomas and is also working on a wide range of other projects such as evaluation of the Young Apprenticeship Programme and Youth Opportunity Funds and Personal Finance Education.

Maha is also chairing the Methodology Working Group at NFER which aims to identify and explore relevant methodological approaches used both within and outside the Foundation with a view to promoting and adding value to NFER's methodological development and direction.

research engaged schools
The contribution of research to school improvement has been a matter of considerable debate. It is widely argued that educational practice should be more evidence based, but it is acknowledged that this is not easy to achieve.
