Using the Educational Evidence Portal to do research
Wendy Tury, Head of CMIS at NFER and Pauline Benefield, Deputy Librarian NFER
How can you find good, reliable evidence based on educational research to support your own work, and your professional development? How do you begin to search for useful and trustworthy sources? Ten UK organisations got together to develop the UK Educational Evidence Portal (EEP) - a free online resource for use by researchers, practitioners and policy makers alike. This workshop will brief delegates on how the portal was developed, why it is important to the education community and how you can use it to find the information you need. Bring your research questions with you to see what you can get out of the resource for yourself.
Wendy is Head of the Communications, Marketing and Information Services department which promotes and disseminates NFER research and related activities. Wherever possible, research should impact on policy and practice and many of the department's services are designed to help clients to achieve this aim. CMIS staff can plan media and marketing strategies, including e-marketing, and provide press releases and on-line executive summaries. We also have full publishing service for on-line or print dissemination. The department also runs the Foundation's website and intranet.
Wendy's experience encompasses marketing and communication in consumer publishing and in education. Following several years in book publishing as Marketing and Publicity Director at Transworld Publishers, Wendy moved to further education as Head of School, for a large college. There she was responsible for developing higher education programmes in media, publishing and print. For 18 months, she was also in charge of marketing and admissions for the college.
Pauline Benefield is Deputy Librarian at NFER. An experienced information professional, she has experience of using systematic procedures in searching a wide range of sources, including electronic and print sources and grey literature, in order to identify all the available research evidence. Pauline heads the library literature review team and has worked on large-scale reviews for a wide range of clients. She has also run training courses for researchers on how to conduct systematic literature reviews. She is leading on co-ordinating the research information for the Centre for Excellence and Outcomes in Services for Children and Young People and represents NFER on the EEP steering group.
